"How much does it cost to build a website?" has no single answer, because the cost depends on the scope of requirements. But the cost structure follows patterns. By breaking down the structure, businesses can more easily judge whether a quote is reasonable.
1. Three Common Budget Ranges
Template-based (about 3,000–8,000 yuan): Use a ready-made template, replace the logo and copy, and go live. The advantage is a short turnaround, usually completed in a few days; the limitation is that layouts tend to look similar, functionality is fixed, and there is limited room for future expansion. It is suitable for the stage when a business is just starting out and the goal is simply to have an official entry point.
Semi-custom (about 8,000–30,000 yuan): Make custom modifications on a mature framework, including redesigning page layouts, adjusting functional modules as needed, and unifying the visual system. This range has a wide price span; the main differences lie in the designer's level of involvement, the number of pages, the scope of functionality, and whether technical support and training are included.
Deep customization (about 30,000 yuan and above): Go through the entire process from requirements research, information architecture, and visual design to front-end and back-end development, testing, and launch. It usually also involves SEO architecture, CDN deployment, data tracking, and backend customization. The timeline is generally one to three months, and the team involved is usually three to five people.
2. Annual Payments
In addition to development costs, the following items require annual expenditure and are easily overlooked:
Domain name: Generally a few dozen yuan per year, but ownership must be clearly defined as the business's own asset.
Server or hosting: Choose based on traffic. Shared hosting usually costs several hundred to 2,000 yuan per year, cloud servers usually 1,000 to 5,000 yuan per year, and dedicated servers cost more. Before signing, confirm the renewal pricing to avoid the first year being counted as a "free gift" and the price jumping in the second year.
SSL certificate: Browsers already have clear requirements for HTTPS, so it is recommended as a standard configuration.
Maintenance services: Includes content updates, security patches, data backups, and troubleshooting. A common industry practice is to include it in the first year and charge separately from the second year; the specific scope should be written into the contract.
3. Where Your Money Is Better Spent
When budgets are limited, the usual order of priority is: clear information architecture, a usable mobile experience, a backend you can maintain yourself, and basic security configuration. Visual effects should be improved only after these four are met. Conversely, if you first pursue a novel layout and then add basic capabilities, rework costs are often higher.
In our experience, projects go over budget mostly not because there are too many requirements, but because the requirements were not clearly defined before work began. Putting scope and acceptance criteria in writing upfront saves more cost than adjusting the price afterward.
