The irreplaceable role of a corporate official website: division of labor with mini programs

Some argue that Mini Programs will replace official websites. A more accurate understanding is that the two serve different roles, and official websites remain irreplaceable in terms of brand endorsement and information accumulation.

In recent years, there have often been claims that official websites will be replaced: mini-programs, corporate social accounts, and platform pages all seem capable of handling public-facing display functions, raising the question of whether an official website is still necessary. A more accurate understanding is that these forms each have their own roles, and the role the official website plays among them will be difficult to replace in the short term.

Reasons Why Official Websites Are Questioned

Many official websites indeed fail to create real value: templated pages, sections that have not been updated for years, and vague contact information. Visitors find it hard to build trust when they see such sites. The problem is not with the official website as a form itself, but with its being treated as a task to be checked off once it is built.

At the same time, new entry points such as mini-programs and social accounts do divert some functions, creating the impression that an official website is dispensable. But this is more of a misreading—more entry points does not mean that one of them has lost its meaning.

Division of Roles Between Official Websites and Mini-Programs

Mini-programs excel at high-frequency, short-cycle interactions: ordering food, booking appointments, checking information, and placing orders—these actions need to be lightweight and fast. Official websites, by contrast, take on another function: they are the formal source of a brand, carry relatively complete information, and serve as the basis for visitors to confirm credibility.

Take industries such as real estate and manufacturing as examples. Official websites often have to simultaneously carry multiple types of content, such as project introductions, qualification displays, and customer messages, resulting in high information density. Mini-programs find it difficult to carry this kind of in-depth presentation. The relationship between the two is more like the area outside the door and the area inside the door, rather than mutual replacement.

Several Thresholds Official Websites Need to Cross

To truly play a role, an official website needs to meet several basic requirements.

First, usability. Visitors expect to be able to get a response conveniently; online consultation, clear guidance, and forms that can be submitted smoothly are all basics. Second, adaptability. Visitors may come from different devices such as mobile phones and tablets, and pages need to be readable and operable normally on various terminals. Third, credibility. Accurate information, authentic content, and clear sources are the prerequisites for visitors to build trust.

About Maintenance Costs

The high maintenance cost of official websites is a common concern. Under traditional methods, every content adjustment requires professional involvement, which is indeed not cost-effective. This is also why new website-building methods have emerged—making daily updates simpler operations so that operators can handle them themselves, naturally lowering costs.

But it should be clear that a low price does not equal suitability. When choosing a website-building method, you still need to look at whether it is stable, whether it is easy to maintain over the long term, and whether the data is secure. If a cheap solution cannot be used for long, it actually becomes more expensive.

Future Forms

Looking at trends, official websites will roughly evolve in three directions: first, more convenient interaction, incorporating Q&A and self-service; second, better connection with other entry points, forming an interconnected relationship; third, more standardized management of content and data, facilitating long-term accumulation.

Rather than discussing whether official websites will disappear, it is better to focus on whether they are continuously improving. The value of an official website does not lie in whether it exists, but in whether it can continuously provide visitors with a good experience. For most enterprises, the more practical question is not whether they need an official website, but what kind of official website they need.
