Common Signs of Website Intrusion and Emergency Response Procedures

Once a website is compromised, the losses often go beyond data to include customer trust and search rankings. This article outlines common signs of intrusion, a six-step emergency response process, and a self-check checklist that can be carried out monthly.

Once a website is compromised, the losses are often not limited to data; they also include customer trust and search rankings. Discovering it in time and handling it according to procedure can keep the impact contained. The following covers three parts: identifying signs, emergency response, and routine self-checks.

Common signs

  • Content has been tampered with or abnormal content has been inserted, especially unrelated external links appearing in the page footer or sidebar.
  • Traffic or bandwidth suddenly spikes abnormally, possibly because the site is being used to launch attacks or send spam.
  • Search engines show a security warning in results, or you receive a risk alert in a webmaster platform.
  • Visitors report being redirected to unrelated pages such as gambling or counterfeit shopping sites.
  • Server load remains consistently high, possibly because a mining program has been implanted.
  • Unauthorized administrator accounts appear in the backend.
  • Security monitoring tools report that core files have been modified, or detect a backdoor.

Emergency response process

After confirming a compromise, do six things in order:

  1. Isolate: switch the website to maintenance mode, disconnect suspicious connections, suspend third-party service integrations, and preserve the scene as evidence for subsequent analysis.
  2. Assess: investigate modified files and abnormal operation logs to determine the time and entry point of the intrusion.
  3. Notify: inform relevant internal colleagues and the hosting provider; if personal information leakage is involved, notify customers and relevant parties as required.
  4. Restore: restore from a backup confirmed clean before the intrusion, update system components, and reset all access credentials.
  5. Harden: patch vulnerabilities, enable two-step verification, deploy protection rules, and enable file integrity monitoring.
  6. Review: compile an incident report, update the emergency plan, and provide security awareness training to relevant colleagues.

Routine self-checks

It is recommended to perform a routine check once a month, focusing on these items: whether server components are the latest version, whether remote access is limited to the necessary scope, whether website files have been changed, whether database account permissions are too broad, whether the content management system core and plugins are updated, whether external resources introduced on pages are trustworthy, whether security-related response headers are properly configured, and whether abnormal logins and error logs are being monitored.

Long-term protection

Security is an ongoing process. Layered defenses, adherence to the principle of least privilege, regular vulnerability scanning, and maintaining team security awareness are more effective than buying equipment once.

One final point: when you discover an anomaly, do not rush to delete suspicious files; preserve the scene first, otherwise you will lose the clues needed to locate the root cause of the problem.
