How designers and development teams should work together: several stages that easily go wrong

There is often a lot of loss between design mockups and the final launched page. This article follows the order of project progression to sort out several stages where the design side and the development side are prone to problems, as well as things that can be done in advance.

There is usually some loss between a design file and the live page. The reason is rarely that either side is unprofessional; more often, the steps are not aligned. If we go through them in the order a project progresses, most problems come from the following points.

Digital translation of brand elements

When moving a company's existing visual guidelines online, the first thing is to determine what can be carried over as is and what needs adjustment. With color, print color values differ from screen display. If you apply print color values directly to a web page, the result is often too dark. They need to be recalibrated to screen standards, with actual device rendering as the reference.

Fonts are another frequent issue. Some fonts commonly used by companies may not have web licenses, or may not display properly on some devices. A workable approach is to prioritize available open-source fonts, or confirm licensing options in advance, rather than discovering after launch that fonts have been replaced and layout is broken.

For images, you need to confirm format, dimensions, and compression. A high-clarity mockup from the design file, exported and uploaded directly, will slow down the page, so it usually needs to be reprocessed according to its actual display size.

What the deliverables need to make clear

Handing over only a flat mockup is a major cause of later rework. A relatively complete handoff includes three parts: editable source files, organized reusable components, and parameter documentation for motion effects.

Motion effects are especially easy to overlook. Communicating with descriptions like "slight bounce" or "natural transition" makes it nearly impossible for the implemented version to match expectations. An effective approach is to give specific parameters, such as animation duration, easing curve, and trigger conditions. Quantifying these will noticeably reduce the number of reworks.

Responsiveness and edge cases

Design files usually cover only major screen widths, but actual users have all kinds of devices. At handoff, you need to specify behavior at several key widths and how to handle cases when content exceeds expectations—how to truncate an overly long title, what to show when a list is empty, and what placeholder to use when an image fails to load. These edge cases will all be encountered in actual use.

Iteration after launch

Publishing the page is not the endpoint. You can plan in advance which spots to observe, such as the main buttons on the homepage and the submission entry points of forms, and use actual data to judge whether the design meets expectations. You can also prepare multiple versions of a visual solution and compare their performance through small-traffic tests, rather than deciding through discussion.

The core of collaboration is to make the design intent accurately understood at every step. Translating "good-looking" into executable parameters and rules is one of the most valuable abilities a designer can have in this chain.
