The three dimensions of web design: visual, interaction, and technology.

A good page must hold up on three levels: visual, interaction, and technical. This article explains what problem each level solves, current common practices, and the relationships among them.

Web design is more than a single layer of visuals. It can be viewed in three layers: visuals address “how it looks,” interaction addresses “how it feels to use,” and technology addresses “whether it can be implemented reliably.” Only when each of the three layers holds up can the page stand.

Visuals: From Decoration to Expression

Visuals are the user's first point of contact with a page. Current practices show several clear tendencies.

First, refined minimalism. Early minimalism relied on removing elements; now it emphasizes prioritization by importance: keep what is relevant to the core task and use whitespace, font weight, and contrast to establish hierarchy, rather than simply reducing content. This lowers comprehension cost while preventing the page from losing its distinctiveness.

Second, the narrativization of dynamic elements. Small animations are no longer merely decoration; they serve feedback functions: progress indicators on submission, transitions when switching, and state changes on hover. The key is that these motion effects follow a consistent logic rather than each acting on its own.

Third, the functionalization of color palettes. Color does not only express emotion; it also plays a role in information categorization. Sections of different natures are treated with different colors to help users quickly distinguish content.

Interaction: From Users Adapting to Systems Understanding

The goal of interaction design is changing, from making users learn to use the interface to making the interface actively adapt to users.

One approach is anticipation. The system adjusts the default content presented based on the user's source, device, and usage behavior, reducing unnecessary steps. Another is experimentation with multimodality: voice, gestures, and other methods are gradually entering practical use, but they usually exist as optional features, while basic operations must still be completable on common devices.

At the same time, the balance between personalization and privacy needs attention. Collecting preference information should be restrained; judgments should be made using environmental cues rather than relying on continuous tracking of users. This concerns compliance on the one hand and user trust on the other.

Technology: From Support to Empowerment

Technology determines how far design can go. Responsive design has evolved from mere screen adaptation to dynamically adjusting resource loading strategies based on network conditions and device performance. Performance itself is increasingly treated as a design issue: streamlining structure, using more efficient image formats, and controlling a page's resource footprint all directly affect the experience.

Low-code tools allow more designs to be implemented directly, shortening the distance from mockup to page. However, attention must be paid to the homogenization caused by templates. A more mature approach is to use a general framework as a foundation and then customize it for the brand, rather than relying entirely on ready-made templates.

The Relationship Between the Three Layers

These three layers are not a parallel checklist but are mutually constraining. Visual ideas are constrained by technical conditions, and technical choices in turn affect what interaction is possible. It is normal to repeatedly trade off among the three during the design process. To judge whether a page is mature, see whether it has obvious weaknesses in any of these three layers.
