In the past, users mainly relied on search to find information and looked at lists of links; now more and more people hand their questions directly to AI and look at the answers it gives. Which brands are mentioned in those answers directly affects users' perceptions. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is about exactly this—enabling AI to accurately and preferentially cite your information when answering related questions.
How it differs from conventional search optimization
Conventional search optimization strives to be "ranked higher," and users still click links to judge for themselves; GEO strives to be "cited in the answer," and users often only look at the conclusion. The former optimizes the position of a page; the latter optimizes the degree to which content is understood and trusted. The two do not conflict; at bottom, both are about stating information clearly and accurately.
Step 1: Clarify your goals and materials
- Core keywords to target: the full brand name, common abbreviations, and main product names.
- Questions users may ask: put yourself in the customer's shoes and list a few of the most frequently asked natural-language questions.
- Landing pages: links to the homepage, main product pages, or brand introduction page, and make sure these pages contain complete information.
Step 2: First, get a clear view of the current state
Before starting, first find out whether and how the brand is currently mentioned. The method is straightforward: ask the prepared questions one by one to several commonly used AI tools, see whether your brand appears in the answers, where it appears, and in what context, while also noting whether competitors are mentioned. Try several tools and ask multiple times, because the same question can produce different answers across models and at different times. This step gives you a reference point for judging whether there are changes later.
Step 3: Make the content more readable
AI is more willing to use content that is clearly structured and has clear sources.
Clear structure. Organize key information using subheadings, lists, and comparison tables, and make FAQs into separate blocks. With text piled together in whole paragraphs, neither people nor machines can easily grasp the key points.
Clear signals. Complete page titles and descriptions, add structured markup to key content, use an encrypted connection for the site, and keep the name, address, and phone number consistent across the web. These practices were originally intended for search, and they are equally useful for AI today.
Complete information. Add use cases, FAQs, and genuine reviews to give the content a reason to be cited—AI will not cite a passage that does not clearly say anything.
Step 4: Cultivate off-site sources
When judging information sources, AI looks at the authority of the channel: content from institutions or media is usually given more weight than casual statements from individuals. Therefore, it is meaningful to maintain accurate, consistent brand information on public platforms. There is one boundary here: do not create fake reviews or fabricate sources. AI searches within public information; once content is perceived as inaccurate, the loss is long-term trust, and the cost is far greater than short-term exposure.
Step 5: Continuously track
GEO is not a one-time setup. Models are being updated, content is increasing, and competitors are doing the same thing. It is recommended to repeat the earlier question tests at intervals, paying attention to whether the brand is mentioned, whether the description is accurate, and whether its position has changed, and to adjust content accordingly.
A few boundaries that need to be made clear
The object of optimization is publicly visible content, not the model's internal parameters; no one can "rewrite" the model itself. Indexing and taking effect also take time; how fast depends on content quality and crawling conditions, and there is no guarantee of immediate results. In addition, GEO presupposes that the brand itself has something worth saying—when the content is empty, no amount of beautiful structure will help.
